Plovdiv University Paisii Hilendarski (PU) is the largest university in South Bulgaria and the second largest in the country after Sofia University „St. Kliment Ohridski „. Founded in 1961 as the Higher Pedagogical Institute of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, in 1972 it was named the University by the Decree of the National Assembly of Bulgaria. Main activities of the PU are preparing graduates in the humanities, natural sciences, mathematics, technical and social sciences and scientific research aimed at developing fundamental research, advanced technologies and their applications in practice.
Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics of PU (FMI) has nearly 50 years of history. Today it is an established and reputable center for research and training of specialists in the fields of mathematics, informatics and information technology. It employs about 80 highly qualified teachers, from them – 2 doctors of science and 64 doctors, 37 of which with academic rank (9 professors and 28 associate professors). FMI annually trains about 2,000 students pursuing bachelor’s and master’s degree in professional specialties 4.6. „Informatics and Computer Science“, 4.5. „Mathematics“ and 1.3. „Pedagogy of…“ All fields and specialties at FMI are accredited by the National Agency for Assessment and Accreditation until 2020 (http://www.neaa.government.bg/130-akreditirani-doktorski-programi-vav-vu/538-akreditirani-doktorski- programi-v-pu). Every year, in FMI are trained over 65 doctoral students, of which more than 40 doctoral students in the direction of informatics and computer science. For the past five years successfully are defended 21 doctoral dissertations on the subject of the project. For the period 2014-2018, FMI has trained in total 107 PhD students, of which in informatics and computer science – 62.
FMI carries out scientific cooperation in the field of IT and ICT with leading research organizations and universities, including by: IMI-BAS, Humboldt University in Germany, Laboratory for Telecommunications at the University of Limerick (Ireland), Laboratory for research in software technology at the University of Montfort in Leicester (UK), the Laboratory of Information Technologies of JINR in Dubna (Russia) and others.
